What Is Lupus?
Lupus is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorder characterized with episodes of “flaring” where the immune system attacks normal, healthy cells.
When the immune system of a Lupus patient is activated, the immune system essentially hits “the kill switch” attacking unhealthy & healthy cells.
There are 4 types of Lupus
SLE, Cutaneous Lupus, Drug-Induced Lupus & Neonatal Lupus.
The most common form is SLE which can exhibit manifestations including fever, malaise, fatigue, inflammation of the musculoskeletal system, myalgias, arthritis, headaches, loss of appetite and unexpected weight loss/gain, the list is endless…
Cutaneous Lupus is broken down into 3 categories Acute, Subacute & Discoid
Some common manifestations of Cutaneous Lupus are Alopecia & the malar "Butterfly" rash that can be seen along the bridge of the nose, the eyebrows and cheeks to form a butterfly shape.
This rash can look many different ways and some may not exhibit these manifestations at all.
Therefore, each Lupus Journey will never look alike…
